He demonstrated that he could be either melodramatic and sometimes even condescending in many parts of his work where it was unwarranted. the other thing I learnt is that you never meddle in Russian politics, I want to do a quick comparison between two of the world’s most influential manipulators and leaders of cult factions. I can't explain it. All of this Mr. Smith presents lucidly, vividly and sympathetically . . Given that, I don't think that the much-touted "Rasputin File" shed as much insight as the author hyped. Took me a long time to get through this one. . That is why I gave it a rating of 3 stars. Very Recommended. Just a little over a year ago, I asked Santa to bring me some books on historical bastards. This is not terribly surprising, though Smith has done remarkable forensic work to expose the full extent of the distortions. I don't know if it was a bad translation or what, but this book was almost unbearable to read, with very awkward, jolting language. . There are exclamation points where there shouldn't be, and assumptions of what the author is saying in parenthiesis where there needn't be. When I was young I thought that Rasputin was fictional like Ebenezer Scrooge or Simon Legree--a exaggerated character representing a real truth. Unfortunately, despite access to a file missing from the Soviet archives for decades - he sort of muddled this fascinating part of Russian history up for me. I got this book as a birthday present from Nick a bunch of years ago and I have finally just gotten around to reading it. . What apparently places Radzinsky ahead of all other biographers of Rasputin is his access to this long-lost file of the testimonies of various people in Rasputin's orbit.
