If you’re looking for a self-guided full day on the track, with astounding views, diverse ecosystems and a good physical workout, I truly believe that this variation of the (class 4) Goat House Track is the best day hike on Lord Howe Island. The final roped pinch into The Goat House cave makes for a spectacular lunch spot and you’ll be thankful you brought a jacket along as it can get chilly! Two hours return.Of all our walks I highly recommend this one, but time permitting, go on to Kim's Lookout and from there, there are several alternatives to completing your walk. This is the track to Intermediate Hill and leads you up through cow paddocks along a well defined foot pad and track. Please. The usual route that people take to The Goat House, is to start at the track head near Kings Beach (off Lagoon Road) on the western side of the island. There are sections of trail where ropes are used to assist the climbers. I did a couple of trails: the Kim's Lookout - Malabar trail and the Clear Place trail.Kim's Lookout is steep in places but gives excellent views of the whole island. The track begins with a few boardwalks leading through the Soldiers Creek valley surrounded by a luxuriant forest of Pandanus, Scaly barks and Kentia palms. The forest breaks as you arrive at the viewing platform (thanks for the donation Dick Smith!) The peak of Mount Eliza and the small 'secret' inlet known as Old Gulch are nearby. To get there requires an hour-long hike up a series of steps through palm forest under a thick canopy, so there's a certain physicality to the photography week which I like. The challenging upwards climb to the Goat House cave on Mount Lidgbird ’s eastern face takes around three hours return and features ropes along the way to assist with balance along the steep slopes. From where we stand Lord Howe looks like some wild, exotic island straight out of an adventure novel. We all have a sense of pride as our photos are revealed to everyone at the end of each day – including other guests at the resort who are curious to see what we're looking at. However, if you’re a fit and experienced bushwalker, I reckon that this circuit-like route will offer you more variation and a solid day out. The other point about this trail is that there are not any stops along the way that give views of the Island - very dense vegetation.
