I highly recommend this book. Then he started doing worse things at school. Joey is dealing with not only his ADHD but the way others react to it. The book manages to capture the shades of grey that are almost always missing from children's book. Joey's mother ran after his dad. Upon any sort of reflection Joey's decisions look ridiculous, but the fact that Gantos can make the reader understand why Joey acts the way he does is a large part of what makes this an excellent book. I highly recommend this book. Joey's life changes though with the return of his mother, which causes Joey's grandmother to leave. The book is about a little kid named Joey that suffers from ADHD. (Don't forget those adults that bumble through life and careers undiagnosed - teachers, ministers and rocket scientists are not exempt!) He used to weave spider webs with twine when his grandma was there, but once his mom came back, he wasn't allowed to do it any more. This is the best book I've found on ADHD that explains it well to children. This is a good story, constructed as if the child is telling it, but woven as only a master storyteller with an understanding of ADD/ADHD could do.
