I liked the fantastic attention given to the violence, particularly the football fights early on. Wooden acting, scenes that don't even try to fit together, let alone create a coherent story . The director made this film as true to live as possible, and he did a great job of doing this, it's a fantastic true story that most Essex and London people know about. The film in my view shows you how the Essex boys lived there lives in Basildon, and how Carlton leach was part of there life's as well. "So what has it got to do with you nose ointment". This film smacks of a middle class director getting hold of a story and making it completely irrelevant. It has some amazing performances from Ricci Harnett, Terry Stone and Roland Manookian who in my opinion jointly make this film worthy of at least a 3* review and at best 4*. And didn't think too much of the sequels. External Reviews Awards I don't get it myself. Its not just some mickey mouse gangster film trying to imitate Lock Stock and two smoking barrels. It won't rock your world of be life changing, but it's not as bad as some of the 1* reviews would suggest. I dont want to give much away but what makes this one diff from the rest in the franchise is the emphasis on comedy more than in the previous, the banter between manookian and stone as rolfe and tucker worth the price of admission alone. The closer we come to the strange but ultimately rewarding (and original) finale, the closer we reach that depiction of gangland movies to which we've become accustomed. Let's face it; Reservoir Dogs wasn't so much a movie about a diamond heist gone wrong as it was about a gang of actors that wanted to be Lee Marvin. Characters come and go, but by the time the 'firm' is established later on we settle in to a more spectator role on life around Mr Leach, rather than his own adventures. This poorly-titled movie builds up to a recreation of the case - but focuses on Carlton Leach (Ricci Harnett), a football hooligan turned gang boss who wasn’t involved in the murders (which happened to his friends) and doesn’t really know what happened (we get several possible versions). I just think way too many reels have been wasted on this subject matter and a good decade should pass before we see this type of flick again. The characters are very shallow and stereo-typed, I would have liked to see more depth there. Craig Fairbrass as pat tate makes this film! For some reason the film assumes we have heard of these people and i can assure you anybody north of Essex hasn't, and that we should be interested in some low lifes story. Really entertaining film/story with a frightening moral. It won't test your grey matter, in fact, your brain isn't necessary for this movie. This film is a disgrace to British cinema! Brtish cinema doesn't have a long tradition of this type of movie and perhaps the closest we have in this country is the football hooligan film . The late 90s success of Ritchie's cliché-ridden Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels triggered a series of pitiful gangster movies from which the genre never really recovered. With themes stolen from 'The Business' the film's only saving grace is Craig Fairbrass's brutal portrayal of a truly evil and narcissistic individual who had no regard for anyone or anything. Obviously you know what you're going to get with these films but the comedy aspect made it far more watchable than usual.
